Program Notes:

  • Roy Hargrove passed away. We honor Roy here with one performance by his hip-hop/funk fusion band RH Factor (“Rich Man’s Welfare”) and a straight ahead jazz track from his 2006 album Nothing Serious (“A Day In Vienna”).
  • Bob Dylan’s latest Bootleg Series More Blood More Tracks collects the tracks that became the epic 1975 album Blood on the Tracks. Featured here is a version of “If You See Her Say Hello”, a tender Dylan ballad.
  • Swedish singer Robyn released her first album since 2010, Honey. The featured track “Ever Again” is representative of Robyn’s cerebral dance pop.
  • On her Thrill Jockey debut Cloud Corner, solo guitarist Marisa Anderson creates a new sound and energy by “fusing the diverse global traditions she favors without drawing too much attention to the act of juxtaposition” (Pitchfork).
  • Shai Maestro’s latest is his ECM debut The Dream Thief. The track “New River, New Water” is one of the most energetic as Maestro’s trio alternatively supports and drives him to new heights.
  • Sonny Fortune also passed away in the last month. “Awakening” is a gorgeous track that features the well known saxophonist on flute.
  • Kamaal Williams dropped the album The Return, a modern trip-hop influenced ride into a loop-filled jazz fusion land. “Salaam” is typical of Williams’ approach, with lots of yummy Fender Rhodes.
  • More recent and classic tracks are featured by The Beatles, Astor Piazzola, Keith Jarrett, Philip Glass, Eric Satie, Mindi Abair, Badfinger, and Rigmor Gustasson.
